Canada, Alberta Commit to Pipeline Approval Timeline Amid Emissions Reduction Efforts
A milestone agreement has been reached between Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney to advance Canada's energy ambitions. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Implementation Agreement, signed on May 15, outlines a pipeline approval timeline and commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The agreement includes a plan to approve the crude oil pipeline by September 1, 2027, with the federal government declaring it in Canada's national interest by October 1, 2026. The pipeline will be used to transport oilsands production to the West Coast, supporting Canada's goal of becoming a global energy leader.
The agreement also reaffirms the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions through carbon capture and utilization (CCUS) technology. However, concerns have been raised about the high cost of the Pathways CCUS project, which is expected to be borne largely by Canadian taxpayers.
