Canada Breaks Ground on Nation's Largest Carbon Capture Project
Canada has taken a significant step towards its net-zero emissions goal with the launch of construction on the nation's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The Origins carbon capture and storage hub, located near Clive in Alberta, is expected to become operational by January 2027 and will initially store up to 1.5 million tons of CO2 annually.
This is a major development for the country's energy sector, with the project connecting to Alberta's existing CO2 transportation network. It will initially serve industrial facilities in the province's Industrial Heartland, supporting sectors such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, cement, and power generation.
According to Enhance Energy, the company behind the project, it has generated over $600 million in economic activity since 2020 through its existing carbon capture project. The new hub is expected to create even more jobs and investment opportunities in rural Alberta.
