Canada Fast-Tracks Controversial West Coast Pipeline Project

The Canadian government has taken a significant step towards fast-tracking the West Coast pipeline project by giving notice of its intention to designate it under the Building Canada Act. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are supporting the proposal, which would see an approximately 1,250-kilometer pipeline transport up to one million barrels of oil per day from Bruderheim, Alberta to a deepwater port near Delta, BC.

The project's estimated cost is between $35.2 to $43.7 billion and would use around 11 pump stations. While the government claims it will create jobs and stimulate economic growth, critics argue that it is an environmentally and economically risky project being pushed forward at 'breakneck speed' without proper oversight.

Environmental Defence has expressed concern over the lack of transparency in the decision-making process and the potential impact on Indigenous communities and wildlife habitats. The public comment period for the proposal runs until September 18th, after which the government will make a final decision by October 1st.
