Canada Lands First Binding LNG Deal with Uniper
Canada has secured its first binding long-term contract to export liquefied natural gas directly to Europe, signing a 20-year offtake agreement with German energy company Uniper for supply from the Ksi Lisims LNG project on British Columbia's northern coast.
The landmark deal will see Uniper buy two million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG starting in 2032, for delivery to customers in Germany, the UK, Sweden and the Netherlands. The agreement comes less than two months after the federal government announced a memorandum of understanding with another German gas trader, Secure Energy For Europe (SEFE), for 1 mtpa of Ksi Lisims LNG.
Ksi Lisims, which is wholly owned by Western LNG, also has sales and purchase agreements with France's TotalEnergies and the UK's Shell. Canada's Minister of Veterans Affairs Jill McKnight said it represented an 'important moment' for Canada's ambitions as a global energy superpower.
