Canada Reconsiders Pipeline Infrastructure Amid U.S. Trade Tensions
Eastern Canada's reliance on U.S. natural gas has revived discussions about rebuilding its west-to-east energy infrastructure, driven by rising trade tensions between Ottawa and Washington.
According to the Canada Energy Regulator, the United States exports around three billion cubic feet of natural gas per day into Canada, with approximately 90% entering Ontario and Quebec.
The two provinces rely on U.S. imports for about two-thirds of their natural gas consumption, despite having access to Canada's largest natural gas resources.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has argued that Western Canadian producers could once again supply a larger share of Eastern Canada's natural gas requirements, citing the province's previous success in meeting the region's needs.
