A major natural gas export deal has been signed between Canada and Germany, marking a significant step in diversifying Canada's energy exports. Under the 20-year agreement, Uniper SE, one of Germany's largest energy suppliers, will purchase two million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year from the proposed $30-billion Ksi Lisims LNG export facility in northwestern British Columbia.

The deal is expected to generate $15 billion for Canada's GDP and create thousands of jobs. Uniper's senior managing director, Mike Newman, emphasized that the agreement will enhance the company's trading capabilities while mitigating geopolitical risks.

However, environmental organizations have criticized the deal, citing the ongoing climate crisis and severe regional weather events. Richard Brooks from Stand.earth argued that expanding fossil fuel infrastructure undermines international climate commitments.
