Canada Tackles Oil Sands Water Pollution with Indigenous-Led Partnership

BioLargo Canada has formed a partnership with Fort McKay Oil Services to treat oil sands process water and industrial wastewater in northern Alberta. The new venture, Tu Nipi Water Solutions Ltd., is led by First Nations people and combines Indigenous leadership with BioLargo's advanced water treatment technologies.

The partnership is backed by a conditional grant commitment from Emissions Reduction Alberta for $4.6 CAD million to support commercial trials of BioLargo's technologies for oil sands process water. The grant application was conditionally approved, and the project budget is expected to be fully funded.

BioLargo Canada will be responsible for technology development, while Tu Nipi Water Solutions Ltd. will focus on implementation and client relationships. The partnership aims to address the long-standing challenge of oil sands process water treatment in Alberta.

The regulatory environment in Canada has shifted towards implementing solutions, with the Government of Alberta accepting recommendations to develop and pilot treatment technologies. Bill C-37, the First Nations Clean Water Act, was introduced in Parliament in June 2026 to set national standards for water services on First Nation lands and support source water protection.

Dennis Calvert, President and CEO of BioLargo, Inc., stated that 'this is a return home' for the company's work on oil sands water treatment. Ron Quintal, Tũ Nipi's Chief Executive Officer, emphasized that 'clean water is the top priority of every Canadian Indigenous community.'

The partners plan to hold a formal launch event in Fort McMurray this October with community, government, and industry participants.
