Canada-U.S. Energy Trade Shows Uneven Recovery in 2025
The value of energy trade between the U.S. and Canada saw an overall decline in 2025, falling by 11% to an estimated $137 billion, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
However, a closer look at specific segments reveals that natural gas and electricity trade experienced a slight increase primarily due to higher natural gas prices and increased trade volume.
Natural gas made up 8% of the total energy trade value in 2025, with imports from Canada averaging 8.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bft3d), a 1% increase over 2024 levels. The value of these imports rose by 52%, totaling $2.6 billion in 2025.
The majority of natural gas trade between the U.S. and Canada is transported via pipelines, with most Canadian exports entering the western and central regions of the border. Meanwhile, U.S. natural gas exports to Canada increased by 4% in 2025, reaching an average volume of 2.8 Bft3d.
