Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reaffirmed his government's commitment to remaining a reliable oil supplier to the United States, despite escalating trade tensions between the two nations. Speaking in Alberta's oil heartland, Carney rejected the idea of using export taxes or curbs on key commodities like oil, uranium, and potash as a retaliatory measure against US tariffs.
Under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canadian officials had explored the possibility of imposing export taxes to drive up US costs in response to President Donald Trump's trade policy. However, Carney emphasized that Canada's reputation as a dependable producer is more important than using key resources as leverage.
The threat of new tariffs from the US has heightened tensions between the two countries, with Trump warning of 50% import taxes on Canadian-made goods unless Carney's government addresses American trade complaints. The deadline for the new levies is August 19th.
