Canada's Diversification Drive Halted by Trump's Venezuelan Oil Deal

A recent deal between US President Donald Trump and Venezuela's oil reserves has added urgency to Canada's efforts to diversify its energy exports.

The announcement put Canada 'on notice' as a competitor in the global market, according to Trump. While it may take time for Venezuelan crude to reach the US market, which is currently plagued by disruptions from the Iran War and the initial phase of the Ukraine conflict, analysts say Canada must accelerate its own diversification efforts.

Canada has been working to reduce its reliance on the US market, with non-US crude oil exports increasing from 3% in May 2024 to 15% in June. The country's energy industry has benefited from improved market access after the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline system, but long-term competitiveness depends on being able to supply different markets rather than being captive to one.

Shipping oil to Asian refineries is more profitable for Canadian producers, as exports are priced against the global Brent crude benchmark. At home, Alberta producers sell to Canadian and US refineries at a discounted price compared to the North American West Texas Intermediate benchmark.
