Canada's Energy Dominance Exposes Flaws in US Independence Claims

Canada is often overlooked as a crucial energy supplier to the United States, but its importance cannot be overstated. In 2025, Canada supplied 63.4% of all crude oil imported by the US, along with nearly 100% of America's imported natural gas, 97.9% of its imported natural gas liquids, and 81.3% of its imported electricity.

Canadian suppliers accounted for almost one-quarter of the refined petroleum products imported into the United States, with exports valued at approximately C$157.5 billion that year.

The US energy system is highly integrated with Canada's, with pipelines, refineries, natural gas systems, and fuel-distribution networks connecting the two countries. Removing Canadian oil would force American buyers to find replacement barrels from other countries, increasing transportation costs and exposure to geopolitical disruptions.
