A proposed West Coast Oil Pipeline (WCOP) aims to transport oil from Alberta to British Columbia, largely following the existing Trans Mountain route. The project has reached an agreement of intent between Alberta and the Oil Sands Alliance, with a one-million-barrel-a-day increase in oil sands production. However, social licence for WCOP faces challenges in B.C., where trust has been eroded by past legislation.

LNG Canada and MNT Limited Partnership, representing five neighbouring First Nations, have announced an investment of up to C$1 billion in LNG Canada's Phase 2 storage tank, with a First Nation majority stake if the full amount is taken up. The Western Transmission Catalysts initiative aims to strengthen electrical interties across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, providing rural and remote communities with reliable electricity.

Despite concerns about 'fast-tracking' major projects, interested customers are eager for Canadian oil. Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, called Canada's potential to become an energy export superpower a 'once in a lifetime opportunity.' Japan's Ambassador to Canada, Kanji Yamanouchi, stated that diversifying crude oil sources is crucial, and Canada has enormous potential.

The Trans Mountain Expansion project, despite facing criticism, paid $1.7 billion to the federal treasury in 2025 alone, not yet at full capacity. Natural Resources Canada highlights the central role of natural resources in the economy, with oil and gas contributing significantly to nominal GDP and government revenues.
