Canada's Energy Security in Question Amid US Trade Tensions
Canada's reliance on US natural gas imports has raised concerns about energy security in the country. Ontario and Quebec receive roughly two-thirds of their natural gas from the United States, with approximately 90% entering Ontario and Quebec.
The Canada Energy Regulator reports that the US exports close to three billion cubic feet of natural gas per day into Canada, with a significant portion passing through American infrastructure before returning to Canada.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith argues that Western Canadian producers could supply a larger share of Eastern Canada's natural gas requirements. She points out that Alberta used to supply almost all of Eastern Canada's gas in the early 2000s and suggests it's time to restore production from Western Canada to meet East Coast demand.
Supporters of expanding domestic pipeline infrastructure argue that it would provide strategic value beyond immediate market economics, giving consumers another supply option and reducing reliance on US imports.
