Canada's Environmental Activists Shift Focus to LNG Export Terminals
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is becoming the focal point for environmental activists in Canada, particularly in British Columbia. The construction of LNG export terminals is seen as a strategic target because it has the potential to drive future natural gas development in Western Canada.
A large LNG terminal would create decades-long demand for additional gas production, leading to more drilling and hydraulic fracturing, new gas-processing facilities, expanded pipeline systems, electricity generation and transmission, coastal infrastructure, and increased marine shipping.
Canada has traditionally sold most of its natural gas to the United States. With LNG terminals on the British Columbia coast, Canadian producers can now reach Asian and other international markets, particularly important for those operating in the Montney formation of northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta.
