Canada's First Oil Town Boomed Before Alberta

Petrolia, Ontario was once Canada's major oil town, thriving long before Alberta. The town, located about three hours west of Toronto, was at the center of a historic petroleum rush in the late 1800s.

The breakthrough discovery of oil in Oil Springs in the 1850s paved the way for commercial oil production in North America and led to Petrolia's rapid growth. In 1866, a major natural gas discovery fueled intense growth in the area, attracting workers, investors, and entrepreneurs who flocked to the region.

Petrolia became such a well-regarded town globally that local professionals like drillers and engineers were sought after for their expertise in other oil-producing regions. The prosperity generated by oil production created a huge generation of wealth in the community, making it a hub of economic activity.
