Canada's Largest Carbon Capture Project Breaks Ground in Central Alberta
A massive carbon capture project is underway in central Alberta, Canada. Enhance Energy Inc., a carbon management company, has broken ground on its Origins project in Clive, about 140 kilometers south of Edmonton. The project aims to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
The Origins hub will connect to the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, a pipeline that runs from the Edmonton region to Clive. Enhance Energy already operates Alberta's largest carbon capture site in Clive, which has permanently stored over nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide since 2020.
Operations at the Origins project are slated to begin in January and will initially store carbon emissions from the Northwest Redwater Sturgeon Refinery and the Nutrien Redwater fertilizer facility. The company says it could support a range of sectors, including oil and gas and power generation.
