Canada's Largest Carbon Capture Project Breaks Ground Near Clive, Alberta

Enhance Energy has begun construction on Canada's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, Origins Carbon Capture Storage Hub. Located near Clive, Alberta, the facility will have an initial capacity to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year by 2027.

The project is supported by two $5-million grants from Natural Resources Canada's Energy Innovation Program and has received a memorandum of understanding between the Canadian and Alberta governments that aims to produce oil and gas with low carbon intensity.

Origins will store CO2 from heavy industrial sources in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, serving hard-to-abate industries such as oil and gas, cement, power generation, hydrogen, and petrochemicals. The facility could connect to central and southern Alberta via a pipeline connected to the province's CO2 transportation network.

Enhance Energy has demonstrated expertise in CCS with its Clive CO2 Sequestration Facility, which has stored over nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2020 and generated over $800 million in carbon credit value.
