Canada's Largest Carbon Storage Project Begins Construction

Construction has begun on Canada's largest carbon storage project, Origins CCS Hub, near Clive in central Alberta. The project aims to store 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually by January 2027, which is equivalent to removing more than 500,000 vehicles from the road each year.

The hub will connect through pipeline infrastructure to Alberta's existing CO2 transportation network and can eventually serve hard-to-abate industries throughout the Edmonton-Calgary corridor. Enhance Energy, the company behind the project, already operates a nearby Clive CO2 Sequestration Facility that has permanently stored over nine million tonnes of industrial CO2 since 2020.

Origins has received two $5-million grants from Natural Resources Canada's Energy Innovation Program and is expected to generate significant economic activity in central Alberta. The project demonstrates how carbon capture and storage can be developed independently of enhanced oil recovery, a key aspect for the next generation of Canadian CCS development.
