Canada's Oil Sands Waste May Hold Key to Critical Minerals
The Athabasca Oil Sands Region in Canada holds vast amounts of industrial waste that could be hiding a major resource of critical minerals. Researchers recently estimated the potential metal content of these byproducts, which include titanium, zirconium, and rare earth elements in froth treatment tailings, as well as vanadium and nickel in petroleum coke.
The study analyzed existing data on mineralogical and geochemical composition to assess the scale of these resources through 2034. The findings suggest that froth treatment tailings contain approximately 730,000 tonnes of titanium, 609,000 tonnes of zirconium, and 31,600 tonnes of rare earth elements annually.
The petroleum coke inventory reached 184 million tonnes by the end of 2025 and was estimated to contain about 201,000 tonnes of vanadium and 66,800 tonnes of nickel. This is equivalent to about 14% of global vanadium production in 2024 and roughly 19% of rare earth production that year.
The complex mineralogy and fine particle size of the tailings complicate conventional refining and chemical leaching, making commercial-scale recovery a significant technical challenge. However, recovering these metals could provide additional feedstocks for technology supply chains and support clean energy applications such as lithium-ion batteries and grid-scale energy storage.
