Canada's Pipeline Ambitions Hinge on Uncertain Oil Production Expansions
Canada's pipeline ambitions are at risk due to uncertainty over oil production expansions. Despite billions of dollars in proposed new projects, oil sands companies are hesitant to commit to significant output growth amid climate policies and long-term demand concerns.
The country is planning six different pipeline projects to transport oil to the US or Pacific coast export markets. If completed, these would increase Canada's export pipeline capacity by 45% by 2035, but require a near-doubling of its current annual average growth rate in production.
Companies like Suncor Energy and Canadian Natural Resources have not committed to accelerating their plans for production increases, citing uncertainty over climate policies and global demand. Enbridge has postponed the second phase of its Mainline pipeline expansion due to customers' failure to commit to capacity increases.
