Canada's Pipeline Ambitions Hinge on Uncertain Oil Supply Growth

Canadian pipeline firms are planning billions of dollars in new projects to transport oil from the country's oil sands to domestic and international markets. However, despite this investment, there is a mismatch between proposed export pipeline expansions and Canadian oil supply growth.

The country's six major pipeline projects would increase Canada's export pipeline capacity by 45% or 2.25 million barrels per day by 2035. But to fill these pipelines, Canadian oil production must grow by over one-third by 2034, a rate much higher than the current annual average growth.

The mismatch between proposed pipeline expansions and oil supply growth highlights Canada's potential difficulties in achieving Prime Minister Mark Carney's goal of becoming an energy superpower. Canadian oil producers are hesitant to commit to significant production increases due to uncertainty surrounding climate policies and long-term global demand.
