Canada's Untapped Potential: From Energy Superpower to Global 'Energy Superhero'
Canada has the potential to become not only an energy superpower but also an 'energy superhero' by providing stable, ethically produced oil and gas to the global market. With its abundant natural resources, including vast reserves of oil and gas in Alberta's oil sands and conventional fields across British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada is well-positioned for leadership.
However, the country's energy infrastructure has not kept pace with its potential due to policy and regulatory barriers. Environmental assessments and permitting processes are overly complicated, taking years to complete and resulting in inconsistent outcomes. Moratoriums on pipeline construction, carbon pricing, and emission reduction targets have discouraged investment in both upstream and downstream projects.
The cancellation of pipelines such as Northern Gateway and Energy East has left Canadian oil mostly landlocked, unable to access global markets efficiently. The result is a policy environment that prioritizes environmental protection over economic opportunity, limiting Canada's ability to act decisively as an energy leader.
