Canadian Companies Shine in Uncertain Times: A Spotlight on Silver
In uncertain economic times, investors often turn to safe-haven assets like silver. With central banks still grappling with inflation and mixed price data keeping interest rate paths in flux, attention is shifting toward hard assets such as silver.
This month's spotlight shines on three Canadian silver-focused companies: Aya Gold & Silver (TSX:AYA), Silvercorp Metals (TSX:SVM), and Discovery Mining (TSX:DSV). These businesses have a strong financial foundation, with low production costs and efficient use of capital.
Aya Gold & Silver generates almost all its revenue from the Zgounder Silver Mine in Morocco. The mine has reported 1.7 million silver equivalent ounces in the last quarter, with cash costs of $17.69 per ounce. This indicates that Aya can maintain profitability even in weaker pricing conditions.
Silvercorp Metals also provides focused exposure to silver demand through its high-grade Chinese mines. However, recent safety-related suspensions and rising all-in sustaining costs have highlighted the sensitivity of margins to operational setbacks.
Discovery Mining combines record gold production at Porcupine with one of the world's largest undeveloped silver projects in Mexico. This provides direct exposure to silver demand linked to AI, solar power, and electric vehicles. However, there is meaningful execution and funding risk associated with this company, including reliance on external financing and recent insider selling.
