Canadian Oil Sands Expansion Held Back by Regulatory Clarity
Canadian Natural Resources, Canada's largest oil and gas producer, reported record-breaking quarterly results for Q2 2026. The company's president, Scott Stauth, attributed this success to 'record production,' echoing the financial strengths seen in recent reports from Petrobras and ExxonMobil.
The release of these results came on August 6, but it also brought a mixed message. While Canadian Natural Resources' financial performance is robust, several major projects remain on hold due to a lack of definitive agreements with federal and Alberta governments.
These projects include medium-term expansion initiatives at existing thermal facilities using the SAGD process, as well as longer-term mining and bitumen upgrading operations. The company's president acknowledged the critical importance of completing negotiations without specifying a timeline.
