Canary Islands Electricity Bills Set to Surge by Over 22%
Electricity bills for households in the Canary Islands are set to rise by more than 22% in August, according to estimates. The increased demand for air conditioning and rising natural gas prices are contributing to the higher costs. During the first 21 days of August, the estimated bill for an average customer on the regulated PVPC tariff reached €61.33, compared with around €50 during the same period last year.
The high summer heat is driving up electricity consumption, which in turn is pushing up wholesale prices. The combination of intense temperatures and increased use of air conditioning has led to higher demand for electricity, making it more expensive to produce. As a result, households on the PVPC tariff are facing significant increases in their bills.
The estimated bill for an average customer includes €7.60 for fixed charges, €39.63 for electricity consumption, and €2.44 for electricity tax, among other costs. The VAT rate has also been increased to 21% from June 1st, which is adding to the overall cost of electricity bills.
Customers on free electricity markets will be affected differently depending on their individual contract. Those with fixed-price tariffs may be temporarily protected from fluctuations in wholesale prices, while those with index-linked tariffs are more exposed to market movements.
