In 1865, William Wallace Cargill stepped off a train in Conover, Iowa, and began building a company that would become deeply rooted in serving farmers. Today, Iowa is an agricultural powerhouse, producing nearly one-fifth of the nation's corn, a third of its pork, and more eggs and ethanol than any other state.

The state's agricultural impact is unique, but reflective of the critical role rural communities play in America's economic and national security. Despite making up only 14% of Americans, these communities contribute significantly to the country's food production and export. In fact, the average U.S. farm feeds 169 people per year.

However, many rural farming communities are struggling with volatile market conditions, rising input costs, extreme weather, and tough global competition. Cargill, which has invested tens of billions in hundreds of facilities across 39 states, including a dozen in Iowa, is committed to strengthening these communities through initiatives like improving market access for farmers and ranchers.

To address the challenges facing rural America, Cargill is advocating for real policy commitment. This includes modernizing trade relationships with Canada and Mexico, passing a new farm bill that lets farmers plan, manage risk, and invest with confidence, and rebuilding the nation's cattle herd to lower costs for consumers and create new demand for grain.

If we rally around these priorities, we can ensure rural communities continue creating opportunities for future generations while keeping Americans fed. That was the opportunity William Wallace Cargill saw when he arrived in Iowa over 160 years ago, and it's a promise we still have a responsibility to fulfill today.
