Carney Ditches Oil Leverage in Trade War Escalation
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has downplayed the idea of using oil supplies as leverage in the ongoing trade war with the US. In a statement, he emphasized that being a reliable supplier is crucial for Canada's reputation, and that Canadians are known for their trustworthiness.
Carney was responding to comments made by President Donald Trump, who had expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed renewal of the US-Mexico-Canada free trade deal. Trump has also threatened further punitive measures against Canada, which is a major shipper of crude oil to the US.
The province of Alberta, which supplies most of the oil sent to the US, has also stated that it will not accept any actions to curb exports or impose export duties on its oil.
Carney's comments come as trade tensions between Canada and the US continue to escalate. The two countries have been engaged in a series of tariff disputes, with Trump imposing tariffs on Canadian goods and services in recent months.
