Carney Poised to Accelerate Canadian Energy Development
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has emerged from recent byelections with a reinforced parliamentary majority and fresh evidence that Canadians trust his leadership during economic uncertainty.
The Liberal party swept all three contests, strengthening their position in the House of Commons. This gives Carney the opportunity to make difficult decisions on accelerating Canadian oil and natural gas development.
One immediate test is the proposed one-million-barrel-per-day oil pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast. The government's current target is to decide whether it should be designated a project of national interest by October 1.
The proposed pipeline would provide new capacity and significantly expand Canada's access to Asian and other global markets, addressing a structural constraint on the Canadian energy sector.
