Carney Touts Alberta's Vital Role Amid Separation Referendum

Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of Alberta in Canada's unity efforts after the province announced a non-binding referendum on separation. The vote, which is largely symbolic, could pose a significant challenge for Carney as he works to maintain national unity amidst U.S. tariffs and President Donald Trump's talk of annexation.

'Canada is the greatest country in the world, but it can be better...we're working with Alberta on making it better,' Carney said during a press conference. He highlighted that 'we're renovating the country as we go, and Alberta being at the center of that is essential.'

The decision to hold a separation referendum was made in response to environmental policies implemented by Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, which have been criticized for undermining the province's oil and gas industry. Since taking office in March 2025, Carney has rolled back several of Trudeau's green measures.
