Alberta's Premier Danielle Smith expressed frustration at Canadian Finance Minister Mark Carney's handling of trade negotiations with the US, which led to the failure of a potential Keystone XL pipeline deal. The province celebrated its 121st birthday on September 1, having achieved six consecutive budget surpluses and created 91,000 jobs last year. However, despite these positive economic indicators, Smith felt that Carney walked away from a $30 billion per year opportunity by not taking up her offer to pledge additional oil barrels.

In an interview with The Ezra Levant Show, Sheila Gunn Reid criticized Carney's use of Canadian energy as a bargaining chip, stating that it was 'such disrespect' to Western premiers. The failure to complete the Keystone XL pipeline deal is one of many missed opportunities in Canada's energy sector, with projects like Trans Mountain and Energy East being killed despite being privately funded.
