Cattle Futures Fall on Grain Rally Amidst Beef Policy Uncertainty
Cattle futures took a hit on August 28 as grain and soybean markets rallied, increasing concerns about feed costs for ranchers.
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange October live cattle settled at 211.725 cents per pound, down 1.2 cents from the previous session, while feeder cattle dropped 1.55 cents to 316.525 cents.
This decline is significant because it comes as the beef industry faces a potential shift in federal policy under the Trump administration, which plans to address processing capacity, interstate meat sales, and beef imports.
The increased grain prices were a key factor behind the weakness in cattle futures. For feedlot operators, corn and other feed commodities are one of their largest variable input costs, making it difficult to maintain profitability when prices rise.
