Central Banks Hoard Gold as Geopolitical Tensions Rise

Central banks are rethinking where they store their gold reserves as geopolitical tensions rise. The Netherlands has moved around 86 tonnes of gold from vaults in the US and Canada to London, citing increased unrest.

The Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), said it made the move 'in view of increasing geopolitical unrest.' The relocation took place between March and August this year, with the gold now stored at the Bank of England. This decision mirrors moves by other European countries, including France and Germany.

The Netherlands' decision is seen as a sign that central banks are taking steps to improve their preparedness for potential crises. London's importance in the global bullion market makes it an attractive location for gold storage. The city's deep and highly developed gold market provides advantages such as greater accessibility and established infrastructure.

The shift towards gold storage is also linked to a broader trend of central banks accumulating more gold. According to the World Gold Council, countries have purchased around 1,000 tonnes annually over the past four years, a significant increase from the previous decade. Rising gold prices, which reached a record high in January, have contributed to this growth.
