Central Banks Hoard Gold as Prices Fluctuate Amid Fed Rate Hike Fears

The gold market is living two distinct lives. On one hand, central banks have been accumulating record amounts of gold, with official institutions adding a net 288.9 tonnes in the second quarter, a 62 percent jump from the same period last year.

Poland and China led this charge, with Beijing's central bank confirming it had purchased a net 20 tonnes in July, lifting its official reserves to an all-time high of 2,377.5 tonnes.

This surge in demand appears to be driven by more than just tactical positioning, as analysts increasingly view gold as a hedge against the erosion of government bonds and fiat currencies, a demand driver that operates independently of near-term interest rate expectations.

However, this bullish trend was overshadowed by the Federal Reserve's recent Jackson Hole speech, which hinted at possible rate hike risks and sent gold tumbling 3.2 percent to $4,454.60 per ounce on Friday.

Despite this short-term volatility, institutional forecasters remain undeterred, with J.P. Morgan raising its 2026 annual forecast to a range of $6,000 to $6,300 and Morgan Stanley lifting its 2027 target above $5,000.
