Central Banks, Institutional Investors Converge on Gold at $4,087

Gold's price has stabilized above $4,000 after two distinct buying forces converged. Central banks have been steadily purchasing gold for months, while institutional investors, who had been absent, are now returning to the market in force.

The SPDR Gold Shares, the world's largest gold-backed ETF, recorded an inflow of around $557 million on July 24, snapping a five-week streak of outflows. This marks a clear inflection point, suggesting that large-scale investors view the current price zone as attractive for entry following the metal's retreat from its January highs.

Central banks have maintained their buying rhythm, with an OMFIF study finding that 82% of surveyed central banks now hold physical gold, up sharply from 71% a year earlier. China's central bank has been the most conspicuous buyer, expanding its reserves for the 20th consecutive month, adding 480,000 fine ounces in June alone.

The return of ETF inflows adds a new variable to the equation, potentially tipping the balance if sustained rather than fleeting. The immediate catalyst for gold's next move will come from monetary policy decisions by the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan later this week.
