Chad Grapples with Food Crisis Amidst Drought and Heatwaves

Chad is facing a severe food crisis due to intense heatwaves and drought conditions that have affected the country's harvests. The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned of dry spells between July and mid-August, which could impact crop development.

Finance Minister Tahir Hamid Nguilin announced exemptions from import duties for key grains like wheat, corn, millet, and rice to counter potential food shortages. A separate decree by Commerce Minister Mathieu Guibolo Fanga banned exports of vital crops such as millet, corn, and rice.

Farmers in Chad are struggling due to the drought, with some reporting entire crop losses. The government is taking measures to help grow off-season crops in irrigated areas to prevent famine.
