Chad Lays Groundwork to Combat Food Shortages Amid Harsh Climate Conditions

Chad is taking steps to mitigate its growing food crisis by lifting import duties on essential grains and banning exports of key agricultural products. The country's harvests have been severely affected by intense heatwaves and drought conditions, prompting Finance Minister Tahir Hamid Nguilin to announce exemptions from import duties for wheat, corn, millet, and rice.

A separate decree from Commerce Minister Mathieu Guibolo Fanga has banned exports of vital crops such as millet, corn, and rice. The government's measures aim to prevent famine and ensure food security in the country.

Farmers like Mahamat Moussa Ali have been struggling due to the drought, which has led to entire crop losses. To address this issue, the government plans to help grow off-season crops in irrigated areas to alleviate the situation.
