Chattogram Gas Crisis Deepens After Maheshkhali LNG Terminal Fire
A severe gas crisis has hit Chattogram, Bangladesh, leaving thousands of households without cooking gas. The shortage is due to a fire at Excelerate Energy's Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) LNG terminal in Maheshkhali on July 21.
The incident reduced gas pressure in the national grid, significantly curtailing supply. According to KGDCL officials, Chattogram is facing a daily shortfall of 120-170 million cubic feet (mmcft) of natural gas.
Resident Subheschha Ghosh said she struggled to prepare breakfast for her school-going child due to the unreliable gas supply. Ishrat Jahan reported that her family had to buy lunch from restaurants, as it is difficult for young children to adjust to outside food.
