Chestermere Lake Levels Temporarily Affected by Upstream Oil Spill

An oil spill upstream has temporarily lowered water levels at Chestermere Lake in Alberta, Canada.

The City of Chestermere took a precautionary measure on July 25 by shutting off inflows to the lake while cleanup efforts were underway within the Western Irrigation District's canal system.

The oil did not reach Chestermere Lake, but water continued flowing out of the lake during this time, causing temporarily lower levels. The city has since stated that normal operations have resumed after the Western Irrigation District reopened its canal following cleanup efforts.
