US oil companies are reportedly close to finalizing agreements to invest in Venezuela's vast oil fields, a move that could bring billions of dollars and much-needed expertise to the country. Chevron, along with several other major American energy firms, is said to be nearing deals to acquire more than a dozen producing Venezuelan oil fields, which hold an estimated 90 billion barrels of proven reserves.

The negotiations between US companies and Venezuela's government could provide Washington with long-term access to Venezuelan crude, while also allowing American energy companies to bring private capital and production discipline back to the country. This would be a significant development for both the United States and Venezuela, providing leverage over the country's shift away from its socialist government and command economy.

Venezuela has been plagued by years of nationalization, corruption, and mismanagement, which have devastated its energy industry. However, with expanded investment from American oil companies, the country could once again become a major oil exporter. Additionally, Venezuela is reportedly considering leaving OPEC, a move that would further signal its break with the cartel-driven economic model.

Daniel Di Martino, a Venezuelan economist and fellow at the Manhattan Institute, expressed caution about the prospects for American investment in Venezuela's oil fields. 'It would be great news if American companies invest in Venezuelan oil fields and increase oil production,' he said. However, 'this is all still up in the air and I will believe the announcements when I see the rigs and equipment functioning.'
