Chile Reinvests Codelco Profits as Copper Market Pressures Intensify
Chile's copper giant Codelco is facing increased pressure to meet its production targets due to operational disruptions and export restrictions in an already tight market. The company produced 618,900 tonnes of copper in the first half of the year, a 10.1% drop from the same period last year.
The Chilean government has decided to reinvest Codelco's 2025 profits, totaling $2.422 billion, into the company to support its operations and project portfolio. This move aims to reduce the company's reliance on additional debt.
Codelco's Chairman Bernardo Fontaine recently stated that there is 'no possibility' of reaching the previous target of 1.7 million tonnes of copper per year within four to five years, due to project delays, lower-than-expected production, and operational setbacks.
