Chile's Copper Mining Industry Braces for Disruption
Chile has been hit by an unusually severe winter storm since July, causing significant disruptions to the country's copper mining industry. The extreme weather has triggered flash floods, road closures, and damage to power infrastructure in the northern mining regions.
The most affected mine was Lundin Mining's Caserones copper-molybdenum mine, which suspended operations on July 18 due to heavy snowfall disrupting power supplies. Damage to two transmission towers is expected to take approximately two to three weeks to repair, resulting in a production loss of around 10,000 tonnes of copper.
Other mines, including Antofagasta's Los Pelambres operation and Codelco's El Teniente mine, have also been affected by the storm. Teck's Carmen de Andacollo plant partially suspended operations due to road closures.
The storm has raised concerns about the global copper market's supply chain resilience. Analysts warn that production halts will exacerbate already tight market conditions, particularly in the global copper concentrate market.
