China and Jordan Urge Immediate Halt to Middle East Escalation Over Hormuz Oil Routes

China and Jordan have issued a joint statement calling for an end to the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, specifically in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is the world's most critical petroleum transit artery, with approximately 20 percent of global oil consumption passing through it daily.

The joint statement, released on August 24, was made after extensive bilateral talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Jordan's King Abdullah II in Beijing. It emphasized that a comprehensive solution to regional tensions must be achieved through dialogue and negotiations.

China relies heavily on unhindered access to Gulf energy reserves to fuel its industrial output, making the preservation of the Strait of Hormuz crucial for its domestic energy security. The statement also expressed concern over Israel's 'dangerous escalatory actions' in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
