China Balances Asia's Crude Demand Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

China is taking on the role of balancing Asia's crude oil demand in the wake of disruptions caused by the Iran war, which has reduced Middle East oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. According to recent data, China's July imports rose from a near-decade low in June but remained 24.3% below last year's levels.

The country's large crude stockpiles, estimated to be at least 1.2 billion barrels strong, are providing a buffer against the tighter regional supplies. This has helped offset weaker Asian supplies, which have dropped substantially due to reduced shipments from the Middle East.

China's ability to sustain lower imports for an extended period is significant, given its vast stockpile and history of cutting back on imports when prices rise. The world's largest oil importer reported arrivals of 8.41 million barrels per day in July, up from June's near-decade low but still below the average of 11.99 million bpd seen in the three months prior to the Iran conflict.

The impact of the Strait of Hormuz disruptions is evident in the data, with Asia's total oil imports in July standing at 22.82 million bpd, down about 4 million bpd from the average of 26.89 million bpd seen before the conflict.
