China Boosts Gold Reserves by 650,000 Ounces Amid August Price Surge
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has increased its gold reserves by 650,000 ounces in August, marking the largest monthly gain since 2023. This move continues a streak of buying gold every month for 22 consecutive months.
The PBOC's decision comes as gold prices rose nearly 10% in August, driven in part by bets on currency debasement tied to a US Treasury plan to expand debt buybacks. Other sovereign investors also purchased gold during this period, contributing to increased demand and higher prices.
While central banks' buying activity is generally bullish for gold, the metal faces potential headwinds from rising bond yields. Higher yields can make holding bullion less attractive, as it pays no interest. Nevertheless, the PBOC's steady official demand and price swings in response to market moves highlight the importance of considering gold's role in one's portfolio.
