China Crude Oil Imports Surge Amid Economic Slowdown
China's economic indicators for July fell short of expectations, sparking concerns about the country's demand for crude oil in the coming months. Retail sales grew by just 0.6% year-over-year, down from June's 1% growth, while industrial output increased by 4.5%, below the predicted 4.8%. This slowdown in economic growth may not bode well for Chinese crude oil demand.
Despite this, China's total crude oil imports rebounded in July, jumping 22% from June to an average of 8.45 million barrels per day (bpd). This significant supply cushion allowed China to play a key role in keeping global oil prices in check, particularly during the Middle East crisis.
Analysts have warned that at some point China will return to international markets, and when it does, it could be bad news for 'oil bears' who bet against rising oil prices. For now, however, China's opportunistic buying of crude continues to support global oil markets.
