China Gas Revives US LNG Imports Amid Shift in Energy Mix
China Gas Holdings has agreed to purchase 500,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from US energy company Venture Global each year for 20 years, starting in 2030. This deal was announced ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's planned visit to Washington later this month.
The agreement marks a significant shift in China's LNG imports, as the country had previously halted such imports in March 2025 due to tariffs imposed by Beijing on US energy products. The tariffs, which include a 15% tax on LNG, remain in place despite the suspension of an additional 24% tariff on US products for one year.
China Gas Chairman and President Liu Ming Hui said that the deal 'further strengthens our portfolio while underscoring our commitment to building an international energy trading hub.' The sales agreement brings Venture Global's long-term LNG supply commitments to China Gas to 2.5 million tonnes per year.
