China Navigates Yemen Blockade with Houthi Talks on Tanker Safety
China has been in talks with Yemen's Houthi movement to ensure safe passage for its tankers through the Red Sea, following the militia's declaration of a blockade on July 20. The Houthis had pledged to prevent access to Saudi ports, but China asked them directly to promise safe passage for its vessels.
The talks between Beijing and the Houthis date back to before the announcement of the blockade, with Chinese officials clearing each tanker individually with the militia. This process has been coordinated with Iran, which has informed both sides of their actions.
At least four tankers have loaded crude from Saudi ports bound for China since the Houthis announced their restrictions, and several more have altered their course to avoid the Red Sea due to safety concerns. The blockade has significant implications for global oil supplies, as it expands attacks on tankers carrying energy and other supplies beyond the Middle East.
