China Poised to Surpass US as World's Largest Gold Holder
China's influence in the global gold market is growing rapidly, and its total gold holdings are expected to surpass those of the United States within the next five years. According to a report by BMO Capital Markets, China's combined gold holdings now total approximately 30,000 tonnes. This includes official central bank reserves, commercial inventories, jewelry, investment bars, and coins held by Chinese households, private investors, financial institutions, and businesses.
The bank estimates that China will acquire an additional 2,500 to 3,000 tonnes of gold over the coming years through both official and unofficial channels. This sustained buying from China has helped keep the global gold price above $4,000 per ounce, even during periods of weak investment demand in North America and Europe.
China's role in the market cannot be understood solely by examining changes in its central bank's publicly reported reserves. The country's broad demand base includes consumers purchasing jewelry and investment bars, as well as financial institutions and official buyers increasing their exposure to gold.
