China Unveils Ambitious Plan to Expand Oil and Gas Pipeline Network
China has outlined an ambitious plan to bolster its national energy security and optimize its infrastructure network by expanding its oil and gas pipeline network to 220,000 km by 2030.
The 15th Five-Year Plan for Petroleum and Natural Gas Development (2026-30) aims to raise the country's domestic oil and gas supply to 440 million metric tons of oil equivalent by 2030. To achieve this goal, the plan targets constructing 20,000 km of long-distance oil and gas pipelines over the next five years.
As part of its efforts to strengthen energy distribution, China plans to increase natural gas storage capacity to account for more than 13 percent of the country's total natural gas consumption by 2030. Additionally, the plan aims to expand unloading capacity at liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminals to 200 million tons per year and import capacity of onshore natural gas pipelines to 114 billion cubic meters annually.
The master plan also emphasizes the sector's low-carbon transition, with a target to inject 10 million tons of carbon dioxide through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects by 2030.
