China Warns US Sanctions on Iran Will Escalate Tensions

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed concern over the latest US sanctions on Iran, stating they will 'only further intensify tensions' between the two countries. The US Treasury Department announced expanded authority to sanction individuals involved in five sectors of the Iranian economy, including digital assets and technology.

The sanctions also targeted nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels that enable the Iranian regime's activities, including illicit nuclear and missile technology procurement and cyber operations. China is Iran's largest trading partner and primary purchaser of its oil exports, with Iranian oil exports to China dropping precipitously during the war.

Lin noted that China's relationship with Iran 'should not be disrupted or undermined' by US economic interference, stating Beijing will take necessary measures to safeguard its own rights and interests. The Trump administration has previously sanctioned Chinese entities processing Iranian oil, but China's Commerce Ministry blocked those sanctions in May, arguing they violate international law.
